Conway's Game of Life is pretty interesting to watch, but what if you could reach out and touch it? What if you could inject life into this simple digital universe with your fingertips?
During the summer of 2006, a group of undergraduate students at the VRAC built a multi-touch table from scratch using a webcam, infrared LEDs, and frustrated total internal reflection to detect touch positions. I created a multi-touch version of the Game of Life for this hardware which allows any number of people (and fingers) to play with it simultaneously. The result is a highly interactive interface to this digital world where simple life forms are continually being created and destroyed.
